Odor Issues with Colostomy Bag by Day 3 - Seeking Advice

This topic is about dealing with odor issues when using the Hollister New Image Lock-n-Roll colostomy pouch. After switching from an ileostomy to a colostomy, the person noticed that by the third day, odor starts to escape from the pouch, despite using deodorizing drops and cleaning the pouch regularly. Here are some helpful tips and advice to manage this situation:

1. Cleaning Technique
- Flush the pouch each time you drain it using a small water bottle or turkey baster. This helps remove residue that can cause odor.
- Rinse with an inexpensive mouthwash for a temporary fresh scent.

2. Change of Pouch Style or Frequency
- Filters in pouches can start to smell after 1–2 days. Changing to a fresh pouch every day or every other day can help eliminate odor.
- Consider using pouches without a filter and vent gas through the tail instead.
- Cover the existing filter with tape to block odor, which can work immediately.
- If your output is predictable and occurs once daily, try using 1-piece closed pouches and discard them after each bowel movement.

3. Alternative Products & Samples
- Request non-filtered samples from manufacturers like Hollister, Coloplast, or ConvaTec.
- Use Colo-Majic flushable pouch liners, which allow you to change liners frequently while keeping the same pouch.

4. In-Pouch Deodorants
- Use Hollister Adapt Lubricating Deodorant twice daily.
- Hollister M9 drops are more effective for liquid output.
- Drop in one or two mints, like Tic Tacs or Altoids, after emptying to reduce odor.

5. Oral/Internal Deodorants
- Taking Nullo brand chlorophyll tablets or plain chlorophyll daily can significantly reduce stool odor and may be covered by private insurance.

6. Miscellaneous Tips
- Apply baby powder on and under the pouch to reduce sweat-related odor, especially in summer.
- Be aware that colostomy output generally has a stronger smell than ileostomy output due to the longer time stool remains in the colon. Expect some increase in odor compared to your previous ileostomy experience.
