About
Mostly looking for information about my new colostomy and how others deal with theirs. Dx with colon cancer in 2009. Removed 12 inches of my bowel at that time. Lived not so happily with my new anastomosis. For six years, I've known where ever bathroom was in a fifty mile radius. Last July, had recurrence of my cancer in my rectum. Full on removal of my rectum in December of 2015 put me in the ostomate club. I am actually living much better with my ostomy. No more searching for bathrooms while on trips to town or having to stay home because of issues. Quality of life shot up about 200%. Seriously.

I am a registered nurse (former Labor/delivery-NICU-Postpartum) currently working at a local technical college and haven't taken care of a stoma in over 25 years. This is quite a learning curve for me. However, I remember the inadequate appliances of yesteryear. The ones now are superb compared to the ones way back when.

Due to the effects of chemo/radiation -- I am now teaching nursing classes. I can't do bedside nursing anymore. :) I'm happy in place right now. I am an advocate for the costs of care! I firmly believe that cancer or other medical maladies shouldn't bankrupt someone. :)
