I am a 64 year old novelist/playwright and have been living with the ups and downs of an ileostomy since 2013. The procedure was performed near-death while in a state of septic shock for unknown reasons. My medical team guessed wrong for three weeks while I was in a coma before discovering a perforated bowel, most of which has been removed. I was not expected to ‘get off the table’ so my surgery was a little rushed and the stoma placement was less than ideal. My hospitalization lasted four months and I spent all of 2014 trying to get myself back on my feet. Since then I have learned how to cope reasonably well but live in virtual isolation. My quality of life has no quality. I’m here to learn whatever else I can and to share an opinion as the opportunity presents itself. If friendships can be made I would consider this all bonus.
