I was recently (Sept 2022) diagnosed with a rectal cancer. The docs were concerned with possible effects of radiation treatment, and therefore I was given an ileostomy prior to beginning. Learning to manage the bag, and it sounds like I will be super thankful to have it by the end of treatment. Overall prognosis is good, but more surgery could be required. In that case, I'd have the ileostomy closed and a colostomy for life from that point.
