I had bladder removal surgery Jan. 10, so I am new to this experience. I use a 9" pouch, and it seems to me I have to empty it oftener than I want to. I can only go a little more than an hour between emptying. I haven't done any traveling; however, I want to take a trip soon that will involve about 3 hours of driving with difficulty finding a place to empty the pouch. Any suggestions on making traveling easier?

Hi Andy......Sorry I can't be of much help as  I've had a colostomy since last Oct. and am hoping to have it reversed in the next couple of months, but hang in there........someone surely will come along and help answer your questions!

Best Wishes!

This site is a godsend. As a newbie (colostomy on Nov 8, '21), I look at it every day for a number of reasons. Reading what people are going through makes me grateful that my elective surgery because of a severe case of IBS-C is nothing compared to what they have been through and are still living with.

I don't have to go to the hospital for anything related to my ostomy. I feel sorry for those who do and am in awe of those who can use humor to describe their ordeal. I identify with those who express their fears. I especially identify with those who are depressed because I am clinically depressed and have general anxiety disorder. How ironic that having a colostomy eliminated some of the depression and anxiety that the IBS created. I've been widowed twice and I'm on match.com.
I immediately included my operation in my profile and am pleased to say it doesn't seem to make a difference.

And there is much humor on this site and it's one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.

I could name numerous things I've learned from reading people's comments/questions/answers.

After months following on a daily basis, my only negative comment is I don't like listing the most popular members.
It's not that I don't like these people; I do. It's that I think it elicits some "Facebook"-like banter or comments that are gratuitous.

I don't do any social media and think that its merits are overshadowed by too much negativity.

Meetanostomate is in no way negative. I just think the gallery of "popularity" detracts from what is an excellent website that deals with a serious issue that causes a myriad of emotions.

First suggestion would be, do not drink any coffe, tea or soda before your trip as they are all diuretics that will increase the amount of urine.  Second, the night drain bags might not work well depending on the type of vehicle you drive, it also has to be emptied which I personally would not want to do in a public area upon arrival at my destination.  Where will you be travelling, do you know the route?  Stopping to empty it is your best solution.  One of the things that I would not suggest is limiting your fluid intake, because one of the risks that you face since your surgery is the reflux of urine into the kidneys which puts your health at further risk.  That has been my issue since my surgery six years ago.  Good luck on your trip, hope all goes well.

I have had my Urosomy for 18 months now & as time goes by I find I need to empty less frequently. I allways plan car journeys in advance, To make sure there are service areas or facilities en-route. I can push empty ing up to 2-2. 1/2 hrs. I allwas carry my emergency kit with me whereever I go. New pouch , Wipes,Kitchen towel, Dispose bag. I have also been know to empty behind trees, when using backroads. It is a concern ,b ut dont make it your main worry. Before a long journey , I also make sure I have just put on a brand new Bag ( pouch) so I know the wafer adhesive is OK.
