Has anyone had a problem with Medication not having time to disolve with a iliostomy? It seems a good part of my med's do not have time to disolve. The pill is still whole when it comes out. There isn't a liquid to replace the pills, I have asked. I have also tried waiting 2 hrs after I eat, that helps some bit it still happens sometime. When I try to time it, I often forget to take it. (I think they took my memory along wit my colon

Hi jcconk...yep, that happened with alot of my med too that didn't come in liquid or coated.  The full one's are the one's that don't have time to disolve.  My dr. told me to break them up and take those with apple sauce.  Two reasons....the acid in the applesauce breaks the meds down faster in your stomach so it goes to your bloodstream, and the pieces are small and you don't taste them in the applesauce.

Hi JC, yes I also know what you mean there.I was taking epilepsy pills before this and when I got home I realised they were coming through whole. They put me on crushables, but I hated taking them ,because if you held them in your hand while you got a glass of water, they would be all melted and soooo yuk to take..But thankfully now the epilepsy is in remission or gone,as I havent had the need to take them since they found the Crohns. Now with the pill....I wasnt able to take that yrs ago, and now I have no need to but I still got all the symptoms and the occassional showing. So the doctors put me on an injection.Every 3 mths.By the 3rd dose(just on the 7th mth) no more period or any of the symptoms. But the crazy part is I'm not sure if its because I have gone through the change or they just dried up....lol.Hey I'm not complaining....Not giving names of anything, just ask your GP about it.I'm sure you guys have it there too. cya's, take it easy

.  Thanks for the input, I am sure I will get this all straightened out. As for the "other" thing. I had a hystoscopy. They carterize the inside of your uterus and no more dealing with the mess. Yeah!! It's really cool

Janice, I've found that if you take your pills with something like orange juice or soda it helps start the breakdown process of the medicines. As anyone with an ostomy knows, the medication isn't going to stay in your system very long so you might as well help it start to disolve and reach the blood stream before it passes through your system whole. What good would that do? LOL. I have also found that time-release medicines are for the birds if you have an ostomy. 12-hour release? Yeah right! Try 2-3 hours. Hmmmm.......Hope I helped you at least a little bit.

Take care now, Wanda

jcconk and all

Reading your remedies for  ileostomy/digesting meds with interest.  Applesauce ...had not heard of that and will file that one in my brain.

General rule of thumb for ileostomates and  med digestion: liquids easiest, then chewable, then if can be broken in half or crushed.  You do need to check with the pharmacist on crushing and breaking pills, especially if critical meds (heart, blood pressure, anti seizure meds, etc.).  some lose potency when crushed.   Time/sustained release and anything enteric coated doesn't digest well for most.   There is literature that birth control pills may not be digested well as well as some of the antispasmotics (for seizures).

It's a good idea to remind the doctor re: an ileotomy/medication concerns if writing a new prescription.

Question:  have any of you noticed that orange juice makes everything start flowing pretty quickly?
