Short and sweet question ( like my charcoal filter 🥲 )

How long do your charcoal filters last and what brand do you use???

Have only ever used Hollister and the filter lasts between changes (every 4-5 days) - however I do put a small piece of tape over the filter as many years ago I had small leaks coming from the filter itself - never had a problem since, no ballooning, no smell, all good.

With Hollister, until soiled.  With Coloplasts Sensura Mio, until I got it wet.  Actually, that's true for any I suppose. 🤔

Regarding smell, Hollister 2-piece wafers started smelling first.  Same for Coloplast 2-piece wafers but I think they last longer before that happens.  I never had any of their filters fail to let gas out though!  Eventually they too smell.

Hollister. Until it gets dirty and I rinse the bag with water.

Not long ago, I wore a Hollister bag, and if I am standing, it is okay; if I sit or lay down, the filter is done.

I'm using the Coloplast SenSura Mio 2-piece high output bag for my ileostomy; the coal filter lasts about 4 hours before it is blocked due to my watery output.
When my stoma nurse suggested that I trial them, as there were bags (don't know their brands) which were going to be discontinued or New Zealand had decided not to import them anymore, if I liked them other people could get a chance to try them...
I'd read how fantastic the pre-filter was - but that apparently was certainly not the case in my situation - I have to put another bag on every 2 days, and I have to change my entire two-piece system every four days. For people with watery diarrhea, I don't think they work very well. I have complained and asked if they make bags with decent filters for ileostomates, but they didn't even bother to reply...

The two-piece ConvaTec bags I used prior to that at least came with spare filters you could replace... but as my stoma had shrunk in size, as well as becoming oval instead of a circle, they didn't have a wafer I could cut myself, which caused my skin around my stoma (about 5mm wide) to deteriorate so badly that I didn't even realize I was meant to have skin there!
Still, with the SenSura Mio deepest convex base-plate, I have yet to experience a leak - which for me is an enormous miracle.

I use Hollister and the damn thing gets clogged nearly as soon as I put a new bag on. Then it doesn't work so well. It slides down over my stoma and then when my stoma does its business it gets clogged.

I had tried coloplast with filter and once was enough for me. It clogged as soon as I had output. Which is one of the reasons why I am filter less.

I use Hollister and put tape over the filter.  From what I’ve read on here, filters are pretty much useless.

Yes, that is how Holister is too. It's useless because it clogs as soon as you have output.

I use a Coloplast two-piece appliance — SenSura Mio Convex Flip with SenSura Mio Click closed pouch. When I first put on the pouch, I cover it with a filter cover, I keep the filter covered until gas builds up in the pouch then I remove the cover from the filter. It works fine from that time onwards.

I have an end colostomy constructed from the transverse colon. I eat plenty of bananas and take loperamide to make my effluent more firmer and motility slower respectively. I also put a cotton ball in the pouch to provide weight and an Air-gap along with a lubricant and deodorant. I never have to burp the pouch and no smelly odors are released.

This probably seems to be a very convoluted way of using the filter but if I leave the filter uncovered initially, it sucks all the air out of the pouch creating a vacuum which leads to pancaking. The above convoluted approach allows me to avoid pancaking.

I change the pouch, on average, twice a day. Also, effluent never touches the filter — no pancaking so effluent drops to bottom of pouch; pouch is changed when it is 1/2 - 2/3rd full; I sleep on my back with my back elevated between 60 and 90°.

So Cp if you keep effluent off the filter it will continue to work — you will need to change your pouch before the filter stops working. 😊

I have a Sigmoid colostomy (most common type).  Output closely resembles normal stool.  Very rare any liquid.

Use Hollister 2 piece system.  18194 bag,      2 1/4 flange diameter.   Filter works well for 3-5 days.  Many times nothing comes out of Mr. stoma for 2 days. Â
