Why do I feel sick after eating with a colostomy?

I am a colostomate. I had peristomal hernia/prolapse repair 7-1/2 weeks ago. Still a bit sore. A big issue for me is that every time I eat, I feel bloated and just "ill" in my gut about 30 minutes afterward. When I feel like this, I notice my stool is soft and mushy. Anyone else experience this? I have about half my colon left, with a left-side transverse colostomy with mesh hernia repair.

Hi Blaze,

I cannot explain why you feel ill every time you eat. However, with my ileostomy, I have the same experience when I drink my Fortisip (made by Nutricia and is nutritionally complete). I tend to feel sick for around an hour, especially after my first meal of the day. I think I react to the coldness, but I cannot stand warmish Fortisip.
When I could still eat solid food, it made me feel sick, as well as causing so much pain that the doctors told me to stop trying to eat.

So you are not alone.

I hope for you that it goes away. However, feeling sick after eating could be a sign of a bowel obstruction or blockage, so tell your doctor and/or your stoma nurse.

I am scheduled for my reversal on 12/4. All my pre-admin stuff is completed and my GI signed off on the clearance letter this morning. I am super excited and looking forward to not having a bag. I just hope all goes well and heals well so I don't wake up with a temp bag which will lead to yet another surgery.

I have learned a lot from this website and will continue to be on here even after surgery. To all the ostomates out there, keep your heads up and keep pressing forward. We all have good and bad days. Best of luck to you all.

I will be sure to post my progress after surgery. I'm praying for you all.

I can't say for sure what is going on here. I had massive appetite issues and felt sick after eating for a solid 3 months after my surgery.

Granted, yours is a different surgery, but maybe it's upset your bowels and now they are basically "out of sorts."

You might try a low-residue diet for a few days and see if that helps. If so, then add back regular foods slowly. Maybe keep a food diary and see if a pattern emerges.

If it persists, I'd talk to your doctor.
