So now waiting for my OP to remove the rest of the Ol' plumbing.

Been told about 4 months but also sooner if there are cancellations. Can't wait to draw a line under the whole UC saga and recover and move forward. Only problem is it's causing me a slight anxiety because I keep expecting the phone to ring :P

Once this is done I can concentrate on enjoying life and hopefully someone to enjoy it with.

As they say, as one door closes (pun intended), another opens, right?

G-Day Mr. B

Just make sure they are just sewing the butt hole up and not doing any skin flaps that I have heard about from some of the Americans. All they did for me was sew the actual hole up, and honestly, I had no pain there at all. Good luck.

MeetAnOstoMate website turned out to be a lifesaver for me. I say this because, for me, this ostomy journey was a devastating event both physically and mentally.
Here, I found folks who understood my feelings even better than my family or friends could. Only a fellow ostomate can understand how you really feel.

Information sharing is key, as well as support and understanding, to ultimately bring more harmony into our ostomy life journey. I found here, virtually no ostomy questions that are not touched upon. Questions which some might feel, may be too trivial to contact a doctor about or even too shy or embarrassed to ask their own doctor about. They are all addressed here.

For me, anonymity was very helpful in seeking answers to each phase of this life changing medical and mental event. Sharing initial trauma feelings, ongoing support and finally acceptance was what I found with my membership here. I am not sure what my mental and physical attitude would be today without having found this site.

Additional benefits included: finding products and ideas to help with daily maintenance, innovative ideas and as a bonus - some great humor.
After all “laughter IS the best medicine”.

I have been a member for 3 years, an ostomate for 4 years - yes, I certainly wish I would have found it immediately after surgery but so very thankful I finally found it when I did as I truly believe it turned my troubled depression and situation into a more positive attitude and acceptance.

Sincerely,
An Ileostomate nicknamed Justbreathe 🫶🏼

Skin flaps? They told me they will remove the inner sphincter, the rectum, etc., and sew up the outer sphincter.

Mostly done by keyhole surgery and a slight open surgery from the back.

See if some of the Americans come in that talked about skin flaps being pulled over the hole, and one even said they sewed his cheeks together. I am only stating what has been said. My Ken butt was totally painless.

That sounds rather painful and doesn't seem like the correct procedure. My surgeon said she would do it so I wouldn't lose any mobility or risk of it tearing open, etc.

Only thing that concerns me a little is the potential risks of bladder control and erectile dysfunction because of all the nerves in the pelvic region. She did say it was a small risk, but fingers crossed 🤞

Yes, your anxiety level will go through the roof. Waiting for surgery hits you more when you get a letter or phone call giving you a date. Fingers crossed it's all over and done with in the 4-month time scale. Another 2 bank holidays are coming up next month. Let's hope someone due for surgery cancels so you can have their slot in the theater.

You're worried about erectile dysfunction? Aren't you the one living with your mom and watching Disney+? 😁 They cut a lot of nerves down there while doing the surgery, and it takes nerves a lot longer to heal than the other stuff. You might have issues, or you might not. Why worry about it? Get yourself better and healed, then tackle the next issue if you have any.

I don't live with my mum lol 😂 I said locally all I have for support is my mum.

But yes, a worry is that I have this surgery, meet someone, and find I have problems. It's not an imminent problem, yes, but it is a cause for concern.

Very helpful

I recommend buying a gel cushion to sit on after surgery. They didn't exist back when I had mine done, but I tried them in recent years, and they're very comfy.

Whatever you do, don't get a blow-up donut cushion; they spread your cheeks and can cause problems.

Yep, no cushion with a hole.
