Hi anyone out there with a urostomy? I am trying to get this drinking right.
How much should one drink a day?
I have been drinking 4 litres a day and forever going to the loo.
So can someone tell me what is safe to drink?
David

Hi Dave Urostome, same as you. I don't do anything special about drinking - I do the same as before the operation. Coffee in the morning, a couple of cups of tea throughout the day, and the occasional glass of wine or beer during the week. I don't drink any extra water. In fact, I seldom drink water. Oh, I do like a glass of Tesco's Fiery Ginger Beer now and then. After I came out of the hospital two and a half years ago, no one mentioned drinking more.

I don't have any kidney problems. Maybe you do? But I'm not going to drink gallons of water just for the sake of it! I empty my bag every 2-3 hours. It's maybe a third to nearly half full, depending on fluid intake or how near I am to a toilet. Pete.

Same goes for me. I have a urostomy and an ileostomy.
I drink coffee in the morning, a few cups of tea during the day, I drink cola, and orange juice.
But I don't drink a gallon of water a day, that's for sure.
Your brain will tell you when you are thirsty, and then drink.
It all depends on the situation, if it's winter time, and you're inside all day doing nothing,
then you don't need to drink water all day, however, if you're outside, working in the sun,
and sweating, then you need to drink.
Most times I get up at least once or twice a night to empty my bags, and when I do, find myself really thirsty, and down a big glass of fruit juice.

Hi David,

I drink according to thirst first. I drink mainly green tea, cranberry juice, water, and the occasional wine or coffee. The only times when I drink heaps of water are when I exercise and before bed, when I connect the night bag.

I have found that if I drink a glass of wine, I need to counter it with two glasses of water, as I get thirsty and feel dehydrated.

If I drink 4 liters of water a day, I would always be going to the toilet too. As it is, with what I drink, I go every 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I've read to drink 2 liters of water, but we are all different.

Cheers, Julie

I drink it when I'm thirsty. It also depends on what I'm doing. If I do sports, I drink more.
However, drinking plenty of water is always good. We must drink a lot to reduce the risk of infection.
What do you think about cranberry juice? I discovered that when I drink cranberry juice, the urine does not smell.

P.S.
Sorry for my English!

Thanks for the cranberry tip—I'll give it a try. I do drink cranberry, but usually in vodka!

Hi, I have had my urostomy and colostomy since I was 3 years old. I have never thought about what I eat or drink, so maybe it's true what someone said: your body will tell you what you need. Oh, by the way, I am 50 in November and going to Barbados with my wife Angela, and I won't worry about what I eat or drink.

Hi,

I drink normally like before the surgery (had urostomy for 11 years). I have extreme frequency though. If I drink anything, I have to run every couple of minutes. It's been like this since before surgery and worse after. What I do is drink most of my fluids at night before bed and then hook up to a night drainage bag. I don't have to get up during the night then. I will have a cup of coffee in the morning, but then I need to be near a washroom. I will have sips of water throughout the day to combat thirst and dehydration. I plan on getting to a specialist as soon as I can to discuss this issue further.

H Everyone,

I have recently undergone urostomy due to bladder cancer (4 weeks ago). I am trying to get my head around drinking fluids and when to empty the bag. I realize it is still early for me yet, but whereas before I could drink as much as I wanted with no worry, I understand now that I have to plan and limit what I drink and understand how my body works.

I have been told I must drink between 2 to 3 liters of fluid a day, which I am finding a bit intimidating because that will mean I have to plan my life around the location of toilets. Can anyone give me any tips on this and also the drinking of alcohol? I realize my days of pub crawls are gone, but I would like to think I could still have a beer or glass of wine occasionally.

Many thanks, chippy1

I couldn't possibly drink liters of water a day! I'm an utter tea freak, but I must admit I know when I've not drunk enough liquid because my urine isn't a clear color and it smells. My op was nearly 18 months ago, but I had to drink loads back then and it was so difficult when you're so ill. So I just drink what I find normal for me. x
