Changing Barrier During High Output - Tips & Experiences?

This topic is about managing the challenges of changing an ostomy barrier when dealing with high output. The person sharing their experience finds it difficult to change the barrier when the stoma is continuously active, especially in public or when away from home. They are seeking advice from others who might have similar experiences. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. At home, protect the floor by standing on an absorbent disposable pad. Strip off clothes and have cloth baby washcloths ready to wrap the stoma while preparing the skin. Use disinfecting wipes to clean any splashes.

2. Consider using the bathtub for changes. Sit or stand in the tub with supplies spread on the edge. This way, any output can be easily rinsed down the drain.

3. Sit in front of the sink on a stool with a towel across your lap, paper towels over the stoma, and another towel on the floor. Time the spurts and work during the pauses, standing briefly to press the wafer on.

4. Carry emergency supplies in a large purse, backpack, or kit in the car. Include a wafer, ring, pouch, wipes, paper towels, and a roll of tape. Even if a full change isn’t possible, tape can help secure a leaking wafer until you get home.

5. To temporarily slow or thicken output, try eating a few marshmallows, a spoonful of peanut butter, peanut-butter-coated marshmallows, or a cup of applesauce. This might give you a short window to complete the change.

6. For those with colostomies, irrigation can help virtually eliminate unexpected daytime leaks and reduce the need for mid-day changes.

7. Find suitable public facilities. Day Centres often have the best sinks, counters, and space. Many are willing to let ostomates use their bathrooms if asked in advance.

8. General technique tips include preparing and laying out every item before removing the old wafer. Wrap folded toilet paper around the stoma to catch small spurts while cleaning and drying the skin. Work quickly, as experienced users report successful changes in 3–10 minutes. Keep a roll of tape in every kit for quick fixes on partial leaks.

9. Some product references mentioned include Covidien and Medline disposable chuck pads, Lysol disinfecting wipes, and Convatec one-piece pouching systems with convex wafers. These supplies can be ordered through online retailers like Amazon.
