Experiences with Parastomal Hernia Repair Surgery?

This topic is about experiences with parastomal hernia repair surgery. A parastomal hernia can occur around the stoma, and surgery is sometimes needed to repair it. Here are some shared experiences and advice from others who have dealt with this situation:

1. Many people who haven't had the surgery yet find it encouraging to hear about positive outcomes, which helps them feel more confident about possibly choosing surgery in the future.

2. One person mentioned that they are considered high-risk for further abdominal surgery, so they are postponing any repair. They emphasize the importance of discussing the risks and benefits of surgery with your doctors.

3. Slow or delayed stoma output, with evacuations happening every 2-3 days, is a common concern. One person noted that their slow output worsened due to a parastomal hernia spreading over the outlet and partially blocking it.

4. For those with very large parastomal hernias:
- One person had their hernia repaired on November 13, 2019, by two gastrointestinal surgeons working together.
- They also needed plastic surgery to remove about 8 pounds of scar tissue, which resulted in a flatter abdomen and a drop of two pant sizes. This shows that complex cases might need a team of specialists and can have both cosmetic and functional benefits.

5. Another person with two large hernias, one under and one beside the stoma, was advised by their surgeons to delay repair as long as possible due to extensive previous surgeries. This highlights that the timing of repair is a personal decision.

6. A question was raised about whether the original poster's surgery was done laparoscopically, also known as "keyhole" surgery. This points out that the surgical approach is an important topic to discuss with healthcare providers.
