Excessive Anal Mucus Discharge - Need Advice on Managing Ostomy

This topic is about managing excessive anal mucus discharge after having a loop ileostomy. This can be a challenging experience, especially when it happens frequently and without warning. Here are some helpful insights and advice for dealing with this situation:

1. Understanding the Cause:
- With a loop ileostomy, one part of the stoma drains into the rectum. This can cause liquid stool from the active part to flow into the inactive part, increasing rectal mucus volume. This should improve over the first year as your body adjusts.

2. Thicken the Stoma Output:
- Consider using gelling sachets like Absorbagel, Diamonds, or Pearls. These can be added to your pouch every time you empty it and before lying down. They help form a paste that prevents back-flow to the rectum, reducing sudden discharges and odor.

3. Check for Possible Infection:
- If you notice discharge or odor that suggests an infection, consult your doctor about possibly treating it with Flagyl (metronidazole).

4. Dietary Adjustments:
- Metamucil (psyllium) can help thicken the output and has been effective in reducing accidents for some people.

5. Skin and Pouch Security:
- Use 3M Micropore Surgical Tape around the flange to keep your appliance secure, even during activities like swimming or sweating. Always carry a spare pouch, supplies, and a change of clothes when you go out.

6. Extended Wear and Leak Prevention:
- An Eakin Cohesive Seal, a moldable barrier ring, can be used under the wafer. Many find it reduces the frequency of pouch changes.

7. Cost and Availability:
- Absorbagel is shipped from the UK/Ireland, but in the US, you might find Diamonds or Pearls more accessible, though they can be expensive and may not be covered by insurance.
