I've been trying to find the best deodorant and lubricant to use for my ileostomy. Any recommendations and tips in general, please and thank you.

I use the cheapest 'deodorant' there is:  baking soda, which absorbs odor.  I just put a little in each time I empty.  Re lubricant:  I've never needed it and, frankly, don't quite understand why it would be necessary.  When I open my pouch, the output exits.  The 'lubricant' is gravity.

Well,  I  hit the two year mark. I went back and read my posts from when I first found this site. I was very fortunate in that I stumbled upon it only 4 weeks post op. I have said many times that this community really saved me. The first 2 weeks after my surgery I shut down completely. It wasn't until about the 3rd week that my son came in to my room, flicked on the light and told me I was going to have to get back to living because I was scaring him. I had fallen into such a depression.  He  ticked me off,  but it also made me stop and think- what was I going to do? Feel sorry for myself and sulk, or be grateful I was alive.

I've re-read my journals from that time and it was after my son kicked my butt, so to speak, I took an honest inventory and had to dig deeper than I've ever had to. I mean, I had survived a pretty nasty divorce, after a pretty crappy marriage and that was tough. But this was different. I felt like I was now a handicapped person who would be limited in their life and be looked at as a freak. My mental state was precarious, at best.

But then I found this site. I just lurked a bit before posting. I read so many of the other stories and I started to see just how full my life can be, I was not handicapped,  and certainly not a freak! The stories of survival, the sense of humor, the support and compassion was inspiring.  It was then I made myself get out of the dark, and get my sh*t together.

Not all rainbows and sunshine at first, hardly! But with grace from myself - to myself, and the kindness and willingness of the folks here to be supportive, non judgemental and openly share intimate details about their life circumstances,  l not only survived but thrived.

I think of all the years I had suffered with such extreme pain, barely functioning,  and the many hospital stays and how that is all behind me now.  (All fingers, toes, and legs crossed that I never have to go near a hospital for myself ever again. I think I'd rather have a fork stuck in my eye. I loathe every about them.)

So, to everyone who has been a part of this journey with me, to say thank you is not enough. I'm forever grateful to know you all.  My Angels, each one of you.

And as the Grateful Dead famously said,

"what a long strange trip it's been!"

Im so happy I'm tripping with you all.

Personally, I like McKesson Lubricant Deodorant and Revel! Unscented. I know there are less expensive homemade options, but since my insurance covers both of these, I use them.

Welcome, Z... from Dallas- who shot JR- Texas!..  good to have ya here.

You have had an ileo a little over a year now.  Can u give more details such as having  any issues or a kenn or barbie butt? They brand type? 1 or 2 piece?

There are a lot of young people on here with a stoma, u won't feel alone.

As an ileo myself- 9 yrs, yur out put is already liquidity.  U need to bulk it up bc u won't retain nutrients- vital nutrients- without supplements.

M9 works for me. A few drops into  in the bag, and im good till next dump.. u have to keep adding after every dump.

I don't think u need a lubricant.

It's really a question of convenience as to when u add it and where that location is, like home or at a friend's.

M9 is a tiny bottle of deodorant.  Easily fits into pocket or purse.

Others will chime in with less expensive remedies.

Good luck.

Lubricant can be helpful for people experiencing pancaking. I use spray cooking oil. It is easier to coat the bag with a spray, and it's fairly cheap.

Fair warning, lubricant can help with pancaking, but it may not be the complete answer.

Hello and welcome

Ileostomy here…my preferred appliance is a Convatec one-piece, no filter, and a clip closing. I frequently make a morning smoothie with psyllium husk, which firms up output. I apply a small dash of baby oil into the bag, which makes the bag interior like Teflon…a bit of air in the bag and gravity wins in the end. jb

"Brava Lubricating Deodorant" and "Revel! It's In The Bag" are two good lubricants, not so good on the deodorant front. Revel! is by far the best lubricant I have ever used. It is oil-based, and many on this site have complained that it leaked from their pouch. It recommends using 5ml, but I only use 3ml, and I rub a few drops around the area opposite the pouch opening. For a deodorant, I use 10ml of hydrogen peroxide and two cotton balls that I have placed a few drops of essential oil on. I prefer tea tree and peppermint essential oils. Don't be afraid to experiment; Coloplast provides free samples of the "Brava Lubricating Deodorant." Likewise, you can get free samples of "Revel! It's In The Bag."

Thank you for the recommendation. I've tried Revel, but it messed up my filters in my ostomy bag, so I'm stopping using it. I was using Brava lubricant deodorant and am going to start using it again; it's just not as lubricated as Revel is.

My output sometimes pancaked on top of my bag where my stoma is, and it's liquid sometimes and thick sometimes, or both; it just depends. I have a 1-piece ConvaTec bag.

So glad to see I am not the only one using hydrogen peroxide as a deodorant - it's so effective. A certain person browbeat me so much I ended up blocking them as they thought peroxide was a dangerous good. I mix Adapt lubricant (1 tsp) and peroxide (1 tbsp.); this combination keeps the bag from sticking, and the peroxide keeps any odor from output from escaping.

Love that hydrogen peroxide!

Back when I was building satellites, I used HP to remove dry film lube off of deployment parts.

Engineering had wanted us to use acetone. All that did was push it around and get all over our gloves.

Never ask a garden-variety engineer how to remove any residue. The vast majority probably remember using acetone to clean glassware in chemistry class and think it is a one-stop shop for removing all residues.

Z, you are correct that Brava is not as good a lubricant as "Revel!" I have never had it clog my filter. If it is getting to your filter, you are probably using too much. I only use 3 ml instead of the recommended 5 ml. Perhaps 5 ml is needed to make it last between pouch emptying. I have a closed-end pouch, so I don't have to use as much. I also have H2O and H2O2 along with 2 cotton balls at the bottom of my pouch that would probably absorb any excess oil. Finally, I use a spray bottle to add the "Revel!" to the pouch rather than pouring it in from the bottle.

There can be risks when using hydrogen peroxide, but mainly to the parastomal skin. If you spill some on the parastomal area when adding it to the pouch, it can cause irritation and also prevent the pouch from adhering to your skin securely. Also, with open-end pouches that are not closed properly, you can get leakage onto the skin, again compromising pouch adherence to the skin. Additionally, it shouldn't be overlooked that hydrogen peroxide is not used standalone. In your case, you add some Adapt lubricant, and in my case, I add a small amount of water. While hydrogen peroxide isn't always effective as an antibacterial agent, it is a bacteriostatic agent, meaning it inhibits the reproduction of bacteria. When injected into water, hydrogen peroxide releases a large amount of dissolved oxygen, which has a strong oxidizing effect, destroying odors. This means hydrogen peroxide is more effective with liquid or semi-liquid output.

I'm loving these tips using items I already have in the house. So practical. I plan on trying these.

Recently, when I ran out of lubricating deodorant and my bag was just dirty all over (output sticking to the sides the whole length of the bag), I just reclined back, put a little water into the bag, closed up the bag, rubbed the water all over the bag, and then just emptied the bag.

Hi Z, there are lots of great tips. I've used the Brava lubricant, but my ileo is mostly liquid, so I just use the K9 drops for odor now. It turns things blue/green, but works for me on smell.

Thinking you intended M9 instead of K9?

Many pledge allegiance to M9; others detest the smell. There is a link with users sharing their views:

I didn't mind M9, but it's quite expensive.

Thanks for the info. I am really careful that I have a really good seal with my flange, and most of the peroxide is near the bottom of the bag. Haven't had any issues with the integrity of my bags and double-check the closure to prevent leaks.

I see many people mentioning hydrogen peroxide. I was scared reading about it, but your comment just answered my questions. It seems like a good idea. I'm going to try it on some damp cotton balls and see how it goes.
