Cavilon Skin Protectant - Hole Size for Stoma & Spray Application

This topic is about using 3M Cavilon No-Sting Barrier Film to help with red, weepy skin around a stoma. The person discussing this is trying to figure out the best way to use the product, especially since they received both wipes and a spray version. They are also considering switching to different products due to a possible allergy. Here are some helpful tips and advice shared in the discussion:

1. When using wipes:
- Clean the skin thoroughly and apply the Cavilon film right up to the edge of the stoma to protect all the skin.
- Some people apply the film over the entire area under the wafer to prevent adhesive allergies.
- The wipes have extra liquid that can be poured around the stoma and it dries quickly.

2. When using the spray:
- It can be tricky to apply precisely, so aim at the junction where the stoma meets the skin.
- Use two light sprays, as a little goes a long way, and recap the bottle immediately to avoid clogging.
- Practice spraying on your hand first to get a feel for the distance and coverage.

3. For cutting the hole in the wafer:
- Most users cut the hole to fit snugly around the stoma and apply the Cavilon film up to that edge. The barrier ring can sit on the dried film without issues.

4. For irritated skin, try the "crusting" technique:
- Lightly dust stoma powder on the area, then seal it with a Cavilon wipe. Repeat if needed to create a protective layer on broken skin.

5. Additional skin-care tips:
- Use a very thin layer of Aveeno 1% Hydrocortisone Cream, blot with dry gauze to dry weepy spots, and still allow wafer adhesion.
- For moist, weeping areas, shred a small amount of alginate wound dressing, cover it completely with an extender strip, then apply the appliance. This dressing is very absorbent but must be fully covered as wafers won't stick to exposed alginate.

These insights aim to help manage and protect the skin around the stoma effectively.
