Swimwear Choices: Bikinis, One-Pieces, Trunks, and Ostomy Concerns

This topic is all about finding the right swimwear and boosting confidence for those with an ostomy. As summer approaches, many are considering what swimwear options might work best and how to feel comfortable and confident at the beach or pool. Here are some helpful insights and advice:

- For men:
- Regular swimming trunks that are cut slightly higher at the waist can effectively cover the top of the pouch. There's no need to opt for a Speedo if that's not your style.

- For women considering one-piece swimsuits:
- Standard one-piece swimsuits can often hide the pouch completely, especially if you choose darker colors or busy prints.
- There are also ostomy-specific one-piece suits available that have an internal lining or pocket to keep the bag secure and out of sight.
- Be aware that after swimming, filters can clog, and the bag might "balloon." With a one-piece, you may need to step out of the pool to discreetly release any gas.

- For those interested in tankinis or two-piece options:
- A tankini top paired with high-waisted bottoms or boardshorts allows you to access the pouch easily by lifting the hem or waistband slightly.
- Wearing lightweight control panties or similar support garments under the tankini can help keep the appliance flat. Pairing a dark solid-color bottom with a printed top can further disguise the pouch.
- This layered approach has not been reported to cause any loosening of the appliance.

- For those considering monokinis and bikinis:
- A monokini in a dark or patterned fabric can look great and conceal the appliance. Confidence is the main requirement here.
- Full bikinis are also an option and have been successfully worn by some ostomates. Again, confidence and personal comfort are key.

- General tips for everyone:
- Printed fabrics and darker colors can help distract the eye from any outline of the pouch.
- Most people at the beach or pool are unlikely to notice ostomy gear, and even if they do, you probably won't see them again. Don't let fear stop you from enjoying the water.
- There's nothing quite like swimming in the ocean, river, lake, or pool, so find a suit that makes you feel comfortable and dive in!
