Stoma care - Dealing with poop buildup

This topic is about the concerns of a new ostomate who is worried about the effects of fecal matter on their stoma and how to keep it clean. They are changing their pouch frequently to ensure the stoma is clean, fearing that prolonged contact with stool might cause harm.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. It's important to know that stool on the stoma itself is not harmful. The stoma is made of intestinal tissue, which is naturally in contact with output. The key is to protect the skin around the stoma with a well-fitting barrier.

2. Try to relax and accept that some mess is normal. Reducing stress can help you feel more comfortable and may lead to fewer pouch changes.

3. You can use a warm-water rinse method for drainable pouches. Add a little warm water through the tail of the pouch, close it, swish the water around, and then empty it. This can help wash away residue from the stoma, reduce pancaking, and may prevent leaks.

4. To prevent pancaking and help the output move to the bottom of the pouch, you can squirt a little Johnson’s Baby Oil (pink label) into the pouch after emptying or when applying a new one. Keeping a bit of air in the pouch or temporarily covering the filter can also be helpful.

5. When preparing for your appointment with the surgeon, keep a running list of questions you want to ask. Consider using a small digital voice recorder during visits to ensure you remember all the instructions given.
