For the first time since I got my colostomy over 15 months ago, I will be going out of town. Driving to Las Vegas this coming Sunday and staying for 3 days. I will be getting out of my comfort zone of not being away from my home for more than several hours at a time. It has taken me a long time, but thanks to the advice and experience from the many on this site who travel, I am ready. It's a small step and my partner will be with me, but it is a start.

Congratulations on "coming out"..... of your house for 15 months of building courage!!

One small step for you, one small step for others.

Good attitude. Good luck.

When I found this web site, I didn't think its name had anything to do with actually meeting an ostomate but I later learned there were some folks who did meet and develop relationships. How good is that? That wasn't my intention. I definitely didn't want anyone to meet me. I felt broken and wasn't prepared to express those feelings. I thought it was a place where ostomates wrote about themselves, posed questions, shared thoughts, told jokes and, sometimes, just vented. I thought of it as a community of folks with similar interests and various degrees of experience. Mostly I found some of the most caring, selfless, wise and understanding people I ever imagined. I was so impressed with some of the writings; not because of their literary value but the way in which they addressed such a very complex environment. I read hundreds of exchanges and admired the way folks cared for each other. I became hopeful with my own situation and looked forward to the next day's offerings. Certainly some contributors stood out with their experience or particular skills in addressing some things but it seemed like a total effort with synergistic results. I felt blessed to have found this site. I still do.

That is great that you are going on your first trip away from home. I went on a small trip before my hernia surgery just to get away. It was a car trip too. I think going by car is a good start, as opposed to flying somewhere as your first trip. Take small steps. You can do it! I hope you have loads of fun! Glad your partner will be with you.

Congratulations on making a step forward.

I have some mixed anxiety and excitement about my trip to see my mother in October. I'll be flying, so it's quite the deal! I will be on my own (hubby staying home), but I'm really happy to be doing it at all.

Are you going to gamble, for the shows, or a little of both?

Both. I'm also going to see my sister, who is flying in from Maui, and my brother, who lives in Vegas. We haven't been together for almost 7 years, so I'm really looking forward to our reunion. It is the main reason I am making the trip.
