Flying with a Medical Condition: Tips for TSA Screening

Flying with a colostomy can be a bit nerve-wracking, especially when it comes to going through airport security. One traveler shared their experience and some helpful tips on how to make the process smoother by using the TSA Medical Device/Condition Notification Card. Here's what they found:

1. Before their flight, they downloaded and printed the TSA Medical Device/Condition Notification Card from the TSA website. They wrote "OSTOMY" in the condition field and placed the card in a plastic sleeve for protection.

2. At the airport, after walking through the metal detector, they discreetly handed the card to a TSA agent. The agent seemed unsure about the card and simply touched the bulge under the traveler's shirt, asking what it was.

3. The traveler explained it was an ostomy pouch and was then taken to another agent who was familiar with the card. This agent conducted a brief and courteous hand-inspection.

4. The overall experience was respectful and quicker than expected. The traveler recommends using the card to avoid awkward questions or misunderstandings.

5. The traveler chose a hand-search to avoid additional radiation due to previous chemo-radiation treatments.

6. They found that volunteering information about the ostomy before being asked, along with showing the notification card, led to a professional and tactful interaction.

7. They suggest that other travelers print and carry the card to help ease the screening process.

8. Several others agree that informing TSA officers proactively by briefly explaining the ostomy before screening can prevent surprises during x-ray checks.

9. Another traveler plans to request the TSA notification card for their upcoming flight, inspired by this positive experience.
