Stuck Bag - Will It Still Work?

This topic is about dealing with thick output in an ostomy bag, which can cause the bag to flatten and stick together. The person is wondering if the appliance will still work properly in this condition and if it's okay to follow their nurse's advice to change the appliance every other day.

Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Appliance-change frequency: It's generally safe to change your appliance as often as needed, as long as your skin around the stoma stays healthy. Some people change almost daily, while others can go up to five days with the same system.

2. Rinsing technique: After emptying your pouch, try adding a small amount of warm water, seal the pouch, swish it around, and then drain it again. This can help clear out thick output.

3. In-pouch lubricants:
- Use an ostomy-specific lubricant or deodorant each time you empty your pouch and whenever you put on a new one. This helps the stool slide out more easily.
- A few drops of baby oil can be added after rinsing, and then blow a little air into the bag to prevent the sides from sticking together.
- Avoid using vegetable oil or household lubricants, as they might affect the seal of the barrier.

4. Hydration/diet: Increasing your fluid intake can naturally thin the output, making it easier to empty and reducing the chance of the pouch sticking.

5. Adding water directly: Pour a bit of water into the pouch before emptying to help loosen thick stool. You can repeat this as needed.
