Shower Frustration

This topic is about finding a predictable time to shower without a bag for someone with an ileostomy, specifically dealing with a stoma named "Marvin." Lee is trying to figure out the best time to shower without the stoma producing output, but has faced challenges with both morning and afternoon attempts. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Accept that stoma behavior is natural and plan to manage the output rather than eliminate it. Many people find their stoma tends to empty as soon as the pouch is removed.

2. Consider keeping the pouch on for most of the shower. You can do all your washing and shaving with the pouch in place, then remove it briefly at the end for a quick rinse of the stoma. Warm water can stimulate output, so limiting the time without the bag can help.

3. Use methods to catch or divert output during bag-off periods. You can hold a folded square of toilet paper or a paper towel over the stoma while drying off. Some people use a red Solo cup or a plastic grocery bag tucked into the waistband to catch output, or stand over the toilet to let it drop directly into the bowl. There are also DIY and commercial stoma caps available.

4. Try adjusting your schedule. Morning might be the calmest time if you avoid eating late at night. Some people find late afternoon before dinner works better. Consider stopping eating earlier in the evening and extending the time between eating and showering.

5. Slow down output temporarily by eating a few marshmallows about 30 minutes before showering, as the gelatin can help thicken and slow output for some. Adjusting the timing of loperamide (Imodium) under medical guidance might also help.

6. Understand that irrigation is not suitable for ileostomies, but for colostomies, evening irrigation can provide several hours of no output the next morning.

7. Be patient with diet and long-term adaptation. Output patterns often stabilize over time, and some people see improvements after 1–2 years. Low-fiber or carnivore diets have helped some individuals reduce unpredictable output.

8. Consider appliance wear time and skin care. Many people successfully wear their systems for 5–7 days, or even longer with convex faceplates. Check for seepage and try extending wear time if possible. Giving the stoma brief air time before applying a new wafer can improve skin health. M9 drops are effective for odor control, and skin-prep sprays can protect fragile skin.

9. For miscellaneous tips, shave and groom while the pouch is still on to avoid long periods without it. Keep your supplies organized so you can quickly apply a new pouch once the stoma calms. Remember that occasional mishaps are normal, and experience will help reduce frustration over time.
