Issues with New Hope Fecal Collector for Nighttime Use

This topic is about a person who has been living with a colostomy for a decade and recently tried using the New Hope Fecal Collector to prevent leaks during the night. However, they encountered an issue with the connector not fitting securely with the pouch tubing. They are seeking advice or solutions from others who might have faced similar challenges. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. The New Hope system uses a round drainage-tube connector available in two sizes. It's important to have a pouch or bag with a matching round drainage port for a secure fit.

2. If you can't find a compatible bag, you can modify a standard pouch:
- Cut off the Velcro closure at the bottom of the pouch.
- Insert the tube connector halfway into the new opening, leaving half of it outside the pouch.
- Use tape to secure the connection by wrapping it around both the plastic pouch and the connector. Make sure half of the tape is on each surface and avoid wrinkles that could cause leaks.
- Recommended tapes include duct tape or "water-hose tape," which can be found on Amazon.

3. For those using two-piece systems, consider keeping a pre-adapted "night bag" with the hose attached. You can switch back to a regular bag in the morning.

4. To test for leaks, after taping, connect the hose to the collection container. Hold the pouch upright, pour water through the flange opening, and check for any drips. If you notice leaks, re-tape or start over. Smooth, overlapping layers of tape tend to work best.

5. An added benefit of this bedside drainage setup is that it might help reduce ballooning and decrease the need for nighttime or early-morning pouch emptying.
