Irregularly Shaped Loop Ileostomy - Tracing Plastic and Other Methods?

This topic is about preparing for a loop ileostomy, specifically focusing on how to handle irregularly shaped stomas and whether you need to use clear tracing plastic for this purpose. Here are some helpful insights and advice for anyone in a similar situation:

1. You don't need to buy supplies ahead of time. Your Wound-Ostomy-Continence (WOC) nurse will provide you with the necessary materials and guidance during your hospital stay.

2. Hollister offers a free cutting template for oval or irregular-shaped stomas, so there's no need to purchase separate clear tracing plastic initially.

3. Most loop ileostomies tend to be irregular ovals rather than true figure-8 shapes. The size and shape of your stoma may change during the first few weeks, so be prepared to adjust your template as needed.

4. Once your stoma stabilizes, you can save the peel-off paper backing from a correctly cut wafer and reuse it as a template for future use.

5. If your stoma becomes roughly round, you might be able to switch to pre-cut wafers, which can save you the hassle of cutting them yourself.

6. When cutting the wafer, make sure the opening fits snugly around your stoma to minimize the risk of leakage.

7. It's a good idea to practice cutting the wafer yourself while your nurse is there to guide you. This will help you gain confidence before you leave the hospital.

8. In the early stages, a loop ileostomy support rod might create a temporary skin indentation, which can increase the risk of leakage. Your nurse can teach you techniques, such as using paste or rings, to help manage this issue.
