Gloves or No Gloves for Ostomy Bag Changes?

This discussion is about whether to use gloves when changing an ostomy bag, considering factors like cost, skin issues, and the use of adhesive removers. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

- Concerns about Skin and Adhesive Removers:
- Some adhesive removers, like Smith & Nephew Resolve, may irritate eczema-prone hands. Trying to remove the wafer in the shower with soap instead of a remover might help.
- Bulk gloves from Amazon sometimes have a strong chemical smell that can worsen skin issues. Latex gloves feel better but are more expensive and harder to find.
- After stopping the use of Dove Sensitive due to its price, consider trying baby or kids' 2-in-1 shampoos for gentler hand cleansing.
- A no-glove trial led to severe hand cracks when using adhesive remover.
- Allergic reactions to Coloplast Brava adhesive remover have been reported.
- ConvaTec Sensi-Care wipes were preferred, but the new ConvaTec Essenta is less effective on Durahesive baseplates.

- Hand Hygiene vs. Gloves:
- Most people rarely use gloves, opting to wash hands thoroughly before and after changing the pouch, similar to pre-ostomy routines.
- Gloves are used when there are open cuts, severe skin cracks, when handling barrier rings, or when away from running water.
- Gloves can reduce dexterity and may pull up wafer adhesive.

- Hand-care Tips:
- Use mild or conditioning soaps like white Dove bar, Dove Sensitive, Suave Kids 3-in-1 Silly Apple, baby shampoo, Kroger store-brand kids shampoo, or White Dove liquid.
- Moisturize hands after every wash; some recommend Marin Skincare cream or plain hand lotion.
- Re-use a single pair of nitrile gloves by washing them and storing them in a washcloth to save on cost and waste.
- In semi-arid climates, alternating between gloves and bare hands can help when skin cracks appear.

- Glove Purchasing and Materials:
- Buying in bulk can be cost-effective, with 1,000 nitrile gloves costing around $30–50 on Amazon.
- Discount outlets sometimes offer 100-count boxes for about $1.99.
- Prices can vary, and some shipments may have a chemical smell that irritates the skin.
- Latex gloves provide better feel for some, but latex sensitivity is common. Nitrile or vinyl gloves are usually safer for those with allergies.

- Adhesive Remover and Wafer Removal Techniques:
- Hollister Adapt Adhesive Remover Wipes are praised for their effectiveness. Shake the packet, wipe tape edges, and use extra fluid under the wafer to dissolve the seal gradually.
- ConvaTec Essenta Adhesive Remover works for some but not for heavy Durahesive buildup.
- Smith & Nephew Resolve and Unisolve effectively dissolve barrier rings but can sting cracked skin.
- Coloplast Brava Adhesive Remover Spray helps loosen rings, but some users report allergies or irritation.
- To avoid skin trauma, lift the wafer edge and press the surrounding skin down rather than pulling the tape.

- Barrier Rings:
- Brava barrier rings can be tough to remove. If the baseplate alone is leak-free, skipping the ring can reduce residue and the need for removers.

- When Gloves Help:
- People with neuropathy, painful hand-washing, or frequent nighttime accidents keep nitrile gloves at their bedside.
- Hikers and trail runners carry two gloves with paper towels and a folding shovel for hygienic disposal when no facilities are available.
