Hello, I just joined this group. You all seem like you have a great community!

I am 2 months into my ileostomy. Today I sat on the toilet and thought I was pooping! 🥴 Four times today, I have had great pressure in my bum and have released a watery substance that's light brown. I have read it is mucus and that this is normal. I was just needing others' input on the normalcy of this. I had part of my sigmoid colon removed.

It's mucus, and normal. When blood appears, that's an issue. So 2 months in? Welcome to the club.

I'm an ileo for 9 years. Are they planning to reconnect you in 6 months? Or is it a permanent ileo?

After I got my ostomy I found this site and got a lifetime membership. I have had so much help from the core members, things that even the wound care nurses didn't know. If you haven't been through this journey you don't know - only the people that have experienced this first hand truly understand what your going through. The support is enormously helpful getting through this. Afterwards when you start to learn how to deal with this new normal you can begin to help others.  ...mtnman.

I got this on September 10, 2025. I have a scan on December 18 to check the healing and hopefully a reversal in January.

Welcome to the group!

Hubz has a loop colostomy since August and passes mucus at random times.

No one mentioned this prior to it happening, so we know the confusion when the urge to poo started! A little heads-up would've been nice!

From what I've read on this site, it seems how much and when is different for each person.

We've learned a lot from this group of generous ostomates! Browse around the forums and put in keywords to search discussions on different topics. So helpful!

Thank you! It was a trip for sure! Yes, a heads-up would have been wonderful! I thought I had done messed things up! ☺️ I will definitely do more browsing around tomorrow through the group. I appreciate the input!

Hello Chris and welcome!

Although my ileostomy is now 5 years old, I clearly remember this little glitch you mentioned that no one warns you about. Yet another reason why this site is so helpful. I see I addressed this on September 24.

Fartlettes/Turdlettes/Pooplettes, also known as mucus - possible easy explanation for inquiring newbies
Fartlettes = small farts
Turdlettes/Pooplettes = words less offensive to me in place of mucus🤮

These nicknames I have referred to before on this site… A simple explanation would be - if you still have parts remaining south of the bag hugger - namely a butthole, these little “lettes” occasionally may slip out - they do for me even after 4 years of owning a loop ileostomy. I am missing 12 inches of my colon, and the remaining colon still wants its old job back and on occasion, it lets me know by grumbling and spitting “lettes” - sometimes encouraging me to head for a toilet with that old feeling… but nothing much happens, only a feeling that passes. Hmmm. Sometimes I may have the same grumbling and spitting attitude about my old colon from time to time. So if you are a newbie to this site and you have this unexplainable weirdness, most will say not to worry. Many have had it as well. On the other hand, if there is blood or maybe more serious issues, do not hesitate to seek professional answers. jb

I appreciate your feedback and information. I like those words. Sounds more discreet. 😊 I will definitely be careful through my reading to make sure I don't discount my stuff by avoiding a doctor. I just want to be sure what I go through is normal because the passing really caught me off guard.

My husband has had an ileostomy for 3 years. He had the mucus discharge about 3-4 times. It is normal.

Welcome, and I'm glad to hear that your ostomy is reversible! I'm six months in with an ileo, and I feel the urge to push occasionally. I also experience some rectal discharge and need to wear a liner. I see my surgeon soon, and since my ileo is irreversible, I'm going to talk to her about getting a Barbie Butt. Best of luck on your journey - - -

Hi Chris, Welcome to the club. Be prepared to see changes in your mucus. It can sometimes be quite thick and dark in color, very poopish in appearance. But then again, we are all different. Mine varies quite a bit in color and consistency, and it often comes out when I pee. I usually don't even feel it anymore and seldom get that urge to poop that I did in the early days. I don't know if that's just me, or if it is normal for it to change with time.
