What Was Your Colostomy Reversal Prep Like?

This topic is about preparing for a colostomy reversal surgery, specifically focusing on the bowel and skin preparation required before the procedure. Here's a breakdown of the preparation steps and some additional insights shared by others who have gone through similar experiences:

Preparation Steps:

1. **Two Days Before Surgery:**
- Mix 4 oz of MiraLax into 32 oz of clear Gatorade and refrigerate.
- Start drinking this mixture at 4 p.m. and finish it before bedtime.
- Take a shower using regular soap and shampoo.

2. **Day Before Surgery:**
- Follow a clear-liquid diet and aim to drink about 64 oz of fluids.
- At 1 p.m., drink one bottle of magnesium citrate and take the first dose of antibiotics (1 tablet of metronidazole and 2 tablets of neomycin).
- At 2 p.m., take the second dose of antibiotics (1 metronidazole and 2 neomycin).
- At 4 p.m., drink the second bottle of magnesium citrate.
- At 9 p.m., take the third dose of antibiotics (1 metronidazole and 2 neomycin).
- Take a shower with Hibiclens antiseptic skin cleanser before bed.

3. **Day of Surgery:**
- Take another shower with Hibiclens.

Additional Insights:

- Some people find it unusual that no rectal enema was required, as it is sometimes used to clear out any remaining stool from the rectum. However, some surgeons may use a scope to check instead.
- Different experiences with preparation include having a full colonoscopy two days before the reversal, which involves similar bowel prep and fasting until surgery.
- Many patients find the MiraLax-Gatorade mixture more tolerable than magnesium citrate. The antibiotic Flagyl (metronidazole) is often included, though it has an unpleasant taste.
- After surgery, it's beneficial to start walking as soon as possible to reduce the risk of blood clots and help restart bowel function.
- Post-operative ileus, or temporary bowel shutdown, can occur. Having a nasogastric (NG) tube inserted while under anesthesia can help relieve gas and fluids, making it less uncomfortable than inserting it while awake.
