Using Barrier Strips Under Ostomy Wafers for Skin Protection

This topic is about using barrier strips under an ostomy wafer to prevent skin irritation caused by the adhesive. The idea is to protect the skin by placing these strips directly on the skin before applying the wafer. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. Some people warn that using barrier strips under the wafer might prevent the wafer from sticking properly to the skin, which could lead to leaks.

2. Since barrier strips also have adhesive, they might not reduce irritation. It might be better to try a different wafer or a system that doesn't use tape.

3. Typically, the order of application is: skin, then a barrier ring if needed, followed by the wafer. Strips are usually placed on top of the wafer's edge for extra security.

4. An ostomy nurse has advised against putting strips beneath the wafer.

5. Some alternative skin-friendly options include:
- UK Salts barrier strips, which may contain aloe.
- UK Welland barrier strips, which may contain Manuka honey.
- "C" shaped security strips that go on top of the wafer.
- 4-inch by 4-inch protective sheet-style barriers for larger irritated areas.

6. One person mentioned that using strips under the wafer helped their irritated skin heal, and their appliance stayed secure until the next change. They found this method useful as a temporary solution during a skin flare-up, rather than switching appliance brands.
