Ileostomy Issues: Dealing with Trapped Gas Not Entering the Bag

Living with an ileostomy can come with its own set of challenges, and sometimes new issues can arise unexpectedly. One such issue is dealing with trapped gas that doesn't make its way into the ostomy bag, despite everything else functioning normally. Here's a look at some helpful advice and insights for managing this situation:

- If you suspect a hernia might be obstructing gas flow, you're not alone. Others have experienced similar issues when a hernia partially blocks the stoma.
- You might try gently inserting a lubricated finger into the stoma to check for any blockages. This can sometimes help relax the area enough to allow gas to pass.
- Some have found that "training" the stoma with brief digital insertions throughout the day can help keep the passage open.

- Porous stoma plugs, which are tampon-like devices, were once available commercially to help keep the tract open and allow gas to escape. Although these specific products are no longer sold, you might consider making a homemade version or looking for a similar new product.

- Taking Metamucil (psyllium) has helped some people disperse gas and reduce pain.

- For manual gas release, try lying flat and applying firm, steady pressure with your fingers around the stoma, especially where the abdomen feels raised. This technique can often help gas vent into the pouch within minutes.

- A well-fitting hernia belt can be very beneficial. It can reduce external pressure on the stoma and help restore normal gas flow. If your current belt doesn't fit well, consider custom-altering it or finding a replacement that fits better.
