Managing Hydration with an Ileostomy and Hemodialysis

This topic is about managing hydration and nutrition for someone who has both an ileostomy and is undergoing hemodialysis. The person is experiencing challenges with staying hydrated and getting enough nutrients due to very liquid stoma output. They are currently using prescription Lomotil to slow down the output and drinking psyllium husk to thicken it. They are looking for practical advice on what to eat and drink to help with these issues.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Consider using an oral rehydration solution (ORS) that is specifically designed for high-output ileostomies. Liquid I.V. is one option that has been recommended.

2. Keep an eye out for signs of dehydration, such as low blood pressure, dizziness, or worsening kidney function. It's important to act quickly to prevent the need for hospitalization.

3. Consult with your surgeon or nephrologist to find out if you have a condition known as "short-gut syndrome," which can occur if a significant portion of the small bowel has been removed. This condition can affect your dietary needs and may require specific adjustments.

4. Nutritional shakes like Boost, Ensure, or Glucerna can be a good source of calories and nutrients. Try different brands to see which one helps thicken the output rather than passing through too quickly.

5. Electrolyte drinks such as Pedialyte or low-sugar sports drinks like Gfit can help replenish lost salts. You can dilute them with water to increase fluid intake while keeping sugar levels in check.

6. You might also consider making your own electrolyte solutions at home. These typically involve mixing water with the right balance of salt, sugar, and sometimes potassium. You can find recipes from other people with similar experiences or through online resources.
