Hi, I’m finding this site very useful and helpful. Thank everybody for being kind.
I have a three month old ileostomy and I have been on hemodialysis for two years and I’m having trouble staying hydrated because of the amount of liquid leaving the ileostomy.

I’m on Lomotil Prescribed by my doctor to slow things down and also drink psyllium a couple times a day which thickens temporarily, but I’m looking for a balance of what to eat and drink to stay hydrated and still gather nutrients?

Thank you all for your support

There are quite a few of us ileos out here.

A common denominator is dehydration among us.

It sucks practically peeing out of your bag—mostly liquid.

But there is hope, my friend.

You are only "3 months old" as you stated with it.

A lot of things are going on in that body. One of them is, "Where's my intestine, dammit?"

🤭

You will be alright here among us.

To be on that hemodialysis is serious stuff. I'm not familiar with that. Sorry...

But like Sun mentioned, that ORS is important to us. I'm on Liquid I.V.

After 2 bouts of hospital visits due to dehydration.

There are stages of dehydration.

Blood pressure becomes affected.

Chronic kidney disease will develop.

Staying hydrated and eating what matters most is the new norm.

Do you know if you are short-gutted? Meaning a portion of your small intestine has been removed? Find out. Because if so, that's the culprit of high output.

There is a member that's gonna chime in and send you an entire do and don't list. Wait for it.

Three-fourths of it won't apply to you, but it's a decent list of what worked or didn't work for him.

The mantra here is "no 2 people are the same. That goes for injury, diet, healing."

Welcome.

I will be back to check on you.

In the meantime, I hear the welcome wagon approaching with lots of info.

Sit tight. The new year will be looking better for you.

Hi Deb,

As you can see, the outpouring of love and support from this website will help you to find the strength to lift yourself up and out of your current emotional situation. I am lucky to have my husband by my side through all of this, so I will not even pretend to know how you feel and what you're going through alone. I do know that I have great friends on this site and in my life that have been by my side, and hopefully you have many by your side as well. You do have a lot of new friends here. Please feel free to talk through anything that is on your mind. We all go through a confidence deficit when we go through an ostomy surgery. Our body has been marred and your mind feels that way sometimes too. It is tough to move on, but you will. You will be stronger once you realize that you are still the beautiful woman you were prior to your surgery. Hopefully, you can reach out to a local support group and find some additional friends in your same situation. It always helps to have a sounding board wherever you find it!

If you want to stay hydrated and gather nutrients, you might try a drink like Boost, Ensure, or Glucerna. One may work for your ostomy, and one may run right through, so you may have to try different brands to find the one that works best for you. Staying hydrated alone may mean drinking Pedialyte or a generic brand of it, or a sports drink that is low in sugar such as Gfit. You can mix a sports drink with water or mix Pedialyte with water so that you are getting more water but getting the benefits of an electrolyte drink. You can also make your own electrolyte drink; I am sure someone on here can post some recipes for that. Staying hydrated is important. Doing so with an ostomy can be a challenge.
