Do You Use Filterless Bags?

This discussion is about using ostomy bags that do not have built-in charcoal or air filters. The person who started the conversation is curious if others use these types of bags because they want to avoid the extra length that filters add. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Many people find that the built-in filters are not very effective. They often clog after the first use, making them essentially "filterless." This means they don't do much to control ballooning or odor once clogged.

2. A simple way to relieve gas is to briefly open the tail or coupling of the bag. Some people also recommend using an external "EZ Vent," which is a stick-on valve that can be added to any pouch. This is seen as more reliable and easier than relying on built-in filters.

3. Some users have shared their experiences with specific products. For example, Coloplast one-piece bags without filters work well for some people. However, Hollister 2-piece bags with filters are often criticized for clogging quickly.

4. To manage ballooning and high output at night, some people find it helpful to empty their pouch every few hours. Others suggest stopping food intake after 4 p.m. to reduce gas at night, though this might limit evening social activities.

5. For those dealing with high output and/or gas, medications can help. Loperamide (Imodium) can slow output but might increase gas. Combining it with simethicone (Imodium Multi-Symptom Relief) can help with both issues. Beano is only effective for gas caused by beans and cruciferous vegetables and won't work if these foods aren't consumed.

6. If someone experiences severe back or abdominal pain six months after an ileostomy, it's important to talk to a stoma nurse or doctor. Long-term use of morphine for pain was mentioned but questioned by others in the discussion.
