Questions About Upcoming Surgery and Colonoscopy Prep

This topic is about preparing for a series of medical procedures, including a colonoscopy, hernia repair, and stoma repair, scheduled for April 2025. The person has had previous ostomy surgery and is now seeking advice on how to manage the bowel preparation process, especially the large-volume intake of Miralax and the expected high output from the ostomy. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Start the preparation earlier in the morning than instructed. This can help ensure that most of the high-output period is over before bedtime, reducing the need to empty the pouch during the night.

2. A few days before the prep, switch to a low-residue diet. This can help decrease the overall stool volume during the cleansing process.

3. Use a high-capacity drainable pouch:
- Consider using extra-large ostomy bags with a spout for quick emptying.
- Some bags come with tubing that can connect to a larger bedside collection bag for overnight use.
- Consult with a wound/ostomy nurse to get the right product for your needs.

4. If you usually use closed-end pouches, switch to a large drainable style for the day of the prep.

5. Consider staying close to the hospital, such as in a nearby hotel, to avoid a long drive while needing to frequently empty the pouch.

6. Be prepared for the output to feel like hot liquid every 15–20 minutes once the laxative starts working. Have supplies ready for frequent emptying. Once the purge is complete, you can resume normal intake.

7. On the day of surgery, you may be required to take two showers with antibacterial soap. Make sure to plan for this and have the necessary supplies ready.
