Is it normal to pass gas after bowel issues?

This topic is about understanding whether it's normal to pass stool or gas from the rectum after having a colostomy. This can be a concern for those who have undergone such surgery, especially if they have had a difficult surgical history. Here are some insights and advice that might help:

1. It's quite common to pass a small amount of stool or mucus shortly after surgery. This is often just material that was left in the rectum during the operation.

2. Passing gas from the rectum once or infrequently can be harmless. However, if it happens repeatedly, it's a good idea to contact your stoma nurse or surgeon to ensure there are no complications like a fistula.

3. If you experience rectal gas or stool along with abdominal pain, changes in your stoma, or other unusual symptoms, it's important to seek medical attention right away.

4. Many people with ostomies experience "phantom urges" to pass gas or stool. This is because the nerves and brain need time to adjust to the new bowel pathways. These sensations usually decrease over time.

5. Some surgeons choose to leave the rectum and anus in place to reduce the time of surgery and the risk of infection. If a rectal stump remains, gas or mucus can occasionally escape due to residual bacteria.

6. On the other hand, a complete removal of the rectum (proctectomy) eliminates any rectal discharge but involves a larger wound and a higher immediate risk of infection. Surgeons consider the benefits and risks for each individual case.

7. A practical tip is to sit on the toilet when you feel an urge to pass gas or mucus. This can help you manage any residual output safely.

8. Keeping a sense of humor can be beneficial. Many long-term ostomates still experience the occasional unexpected "fartlette" and learn to adapt to these moments.
