Ileostomy Revision Concerns: Increased Activity and Watery Output

This topic is about someone who recently had a hernia repair and ileostomy revision, which involved removing a small section of the ileum. After the surgery, they noticed a change in their stoma output, which became watery and increased in volume, especially after eating. This was different from their usual experience, and they were surprised that such a small change in their intestine could lead to these issues. Their surgeon has now prescribed loperamide to help manage the output. Here are some helpful insights and advice for anyone experiencing similar issues:

1. Even small changes in the intestine can affect how your body absorbs fluids and how quickly things move through your system. This can lead to thinner and faster output after surgery.

2. Removing a part of the intestine that helps slow down the movement of food can sometimes cause a situation similar to mild short-bowel syndrome, resulting in very watery output. Medications like loperamide or Imodium can help slow things down and make the output thicker.

3. Many people with an ileostomy find success using loperamide long-term. Some take it up to three times a day on a regular schedule to help manage their output.

4. Consulting with a nutritionist can be beneficial. They can suggest ways to thicken your output, such as incorporating psyllium husk into your diet, and help you find safe foods to eat after surgery.

5. It's important to stay well-hydrated. Make sure to balance your fluid intake with electrolytes. Some people find that dissolving Nuun electrolyte tablets in water is helpful.

6. Keep your diet varied and be open to trying different foods to see what works best for you. You might still be able to enjoy moderate amounts of coffee, but it's all about finding what your body can handle.
