Protocolectomy Complications and Concerns

This topic is about someone who has undergone a proctocolectomy, a surgery where the entire colon and most of the rectum are removed. They are experiencing severe pain and unexpected discharge from the remaining rectal area. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. After such surgery, it's common to have a small amount of mucus discharge from the rectal stump. This mucus can dry out, turn brown, and resemble stool. However, experiencing severe pain is not normal, and it's important to contact your surgeon about this.

2. If further surgery is needed, it would involve removing the remaining rectal stump and anus, and then permanently closing the area. This procedure is known as an abdominoperineal resection (APR) or sometimes referred to as a "Barbie-butt" closure. It's a major surgery with a lengthy recovery period.

3. One person shared their experience of having their rectum and anus removed after a J-pouch failure. They experienced significant pain for 6-8 weeks during recovery but had no further rectal issues afterward.

4. It's important to advocate for yourself. If your symptoms have changed and you now wish to proceed with the surgery you initially declined, communicate this to your surgeon. Prior hesitation should not prevent you from getting the care you need.

5. Consider seeking a second opinion from another surgeon, especially to understand why the pain is so severe. Possible causes could include an infection, abscess, or a mass in the rectal stump.

6. Another person with two stomas is considering the same surgery and emphasizes the importance of understanding the source of the pain before proceeding, as the healing process can be challenging.

7. A straightforward piece of advice from one member is to have the remaining parts removed and sewn up, which they found beneficial.
