This topic is about a personal experience with ulcerative colitis that led to ostomy surgery, set against the backdrop of a significant historical event in 1963. The writer shares their journey and offers some advice and insights for others who might be facing similar medical challenges.

- Ulcerative colitis can become so severe that surgery, specifically a colectomy with an ostomy, might be the only way to save a life. Recognizing the severity of the condition early and opting for timely surgery is crucial.

- Sometimes, a procedure like a sigmoidoscopy can accidentally cause a colon perforation, leading to an emergency colostomy. While this can be unexpected, the surgery can save a life and also address existing gastrointestinal issues.

- For those who have had inguinal hernia repairs using mesh, such as polypropylene mesh, there is a possibility that over many years, the mesh might adhere to nearby organs. This can lead to complications like:
1. Erosion into the sigmoid colon and/or bladder.
2. A puncture in the colon that might require a resection (colectomy) and an ostomy.
3. The removal of mesh from the bladder can be complex, but it is possible to do so without causing permanent damage.

- It is recommended to have regular follow-ups after mesh placement to catch any late complications that might arise.
