Small Holes Forming on Bag - Any Solutions?

This topic is about dealing with small holes that sometimes form in Hollister ostomy bags, which can lead to leaks. The person experiencing this issue usually gets about four days of use from their pouches, but occasionally, tiny holes or cracks appear after just two days, especially in areas that crease when sitting. The wafer or seal remains intact, but the pouch wall fails. They are seeking advice from others who might have faced similar problems. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Try to keep the pouch flat to avoid creasing. Wearing an ostomy belt or high-waisted boxers can help prevent folds from forming when you sit.

2. Avoid rinsing the bag, as some users have found that repeated rinsing can weaken the plastic.

3. For temporary repairs, you can seal tiny cracks with plastic tape. Some users have had success with:
- 3M™ Transparent plastic tape
- Johnson & Johnson “pink” surgical tape
- Regular Scotch® tape for short-term emergencies

4. Contact Hollister Customer Service to request alternative styles or replacement boxes. Some users have resolved issues this way, especially if they received a "bad" batch.

5. If the problem persists, consider switching to a different brand, such as Coloplast two-piece systems.

6. Check your technique when attaching a two-piece system. Pressing too hard with fingernails while clipping the pouch to the flange might weaken the plastic and cause micro-tears. Changing the flange every two days helped one user avoid pinholes.

7. Rule out external damage. Pets, like cats jumping on your lap, have been known to puncture bags for some people.

8. Always carry spare supplies, including an extra pouch, flange, tape, gauze, dressing, and even clothes, when you're away from home. Leaks can happen unexpectedly due to sweating or equipment faults.

9. If you receive multiple boxes with pre-existing pinholes, document the lot numbers and escalate the issue to Hollister and, if necessary, your Medicare or insurance supplier to address a potential manufacturing defect.
