Loose Ileostomy Output and Nutrient Absorption Concerns

Living with an ileostomy can come with its own set of challenges, and one of them might be dealing with persistent loose output. This can lead to frequent night-time emptying, difficulty in gaining weight, and feeling constantly tired. It seems like the nutrients might not be getting absorbed properly, which could be why you feel this way.

Here are some helpful suggestions to consider:

1. Talk to your GP or stoma nurse about the possibility of taking medication to thicken your output. There are several options available, and finding the right one might take some trial and error.

2. Consider getting blood tests to check your nutritional status. This can help determine if malabsorption is an issue.

3. If one type of medication doesn't work, don't hesitate to try another or even a combination. Start with the lowest dose to avoid the risk of constipation.

4. By improving the consistency of your output and reducing the need to empty your pouch at night, you might find that your sleep quality and overall energy levels improve.
