Nothing Too Gross, Just a Strange Experience After PET Scan

I have something unusual happening and wonder if anyone else has had this experience.

I have had a colostomy for 3-1/2 years now, and last evening I had the definite feeling that I needed to poop from my butt. The urge was so strong that I went and sat on the toilet and pushed a bit, and out came blobs of mucus-like material. It happened again before bed last night and again this morning.

I had a PET scan of my heart yesterday with radioactive isotopes. On the way home, I had a major bag blowout, barrier strips and all. Then this weird thing happened. I did not read about any GI side effects with the isotopes.

So has anyone on here had this sudden anal output experience? What did you do, if anything?

If it keeps up, I will probably try to see a GI doctor.

Hmm ..🤔..sounds like you're thinking the isotopes may have influenced your b.m.? And blow-out?

That is a new thought on here. Sit tight; someone will chime in.., however, as an ileo myself, I don't have much experience with colostomy folks. Nothing to date; presently, no one has reported this type of thing. Hang in there.

On the lighter side, you are located in Roswell? Perhaps it's an 👽 alien isotope just visiting?😁..a close encounter of a transit kind. 😳

Happy New Year to all!  One of the best things that happened in 2024 was finding this site.  I get advice, support, humor from y’all.  Great to be a part of such a kind and caring group.

This is actually quite common.

The portion of the colon remaining near the rectum still continues to produce mucus, which is completely normal. On occasion, this mucus blob will pass through the rectum.

The isotopes from the scan may have simply stimulated you to some degree. It usually makes you feel a "warm" sensation or a need to urinate.

It is completely normal to pass mucus from your bum.

It's quite normal for most people who still have a rectum and anus. I have an ileostomy. I used to pass really awful-smelling mucus before I had my rectum and anus removed, but as with everything, if you're concerned, speak with a doctor.

As others have said, the mucus is normal and may be a coincidence. But the bag blowout does tend to indicate that the GI system was activated. Contrast from CTs tends to do that to me. I'm not sure if the isotope used in your PET would do that, but maybe. When I had PET scans in the past (for cancer staging), the isotope was embedded in a sugar molecule. The body would react to it as sugar... I could see that possibly activating the GI tract. But I really don't know for sure. I may be getting a PET soon, so I'll keep your experience in mind.

Thanks for posting this, Momsy! Hubz is having these urges, and though told this is normal, it's still reassuring to discuss on this forum. Please let us know how you're doing.

Do a little research into diversion proctitis. Common form of inflammation of the rectal stump.

It can develop into serious complications.

Glad to see someone else from Georgia :) Yes, the passing of mucus from a "rectal stump" is normal. Your colon still produces mucus, and it will build up, so you'll have to evacuate it sometimes.

Haha, Roswell, GA.

Although the older I get, the more often I think there are aliens wandering around. 😂

Hi there, you sound a lot calmer about it than I was, lol. I was totally freaked out the first time it happened to me, as no one had mentioned it and it wasn't in the book they gave me.

I had a radical hysterectomy and became an ostomate at the same time, so I didn't know which area it had come from, front or back.

My oncologist/surgeon said it is common with a rectal stub like mine. It can be seen building up on my CT scans as well. It has become a yearly thing for me and can take months of having an urge to poop to finally pass it. I've learned it works better with a squatty potty to align everything if your toilet is too low (which mine is). Best of luck.

Yes, I had that fairly soon after my loop colostomy, and I was really worried. Anyway, it happens fairly often, and in order to control it, I use a glycerin suppository and a lukewarm enema when I shower. As for your bag blowing off, it's happened to me a few times, and luckily I was at home. Not much you can do except try to keep your bag as empty as possible. I take Imodium before I go out and refrain from eating or drinking anything.
