Irritated Skin Around Stoma

The skin around my stoma (I have a urostomy) is red and itchy. We've only used water to clean the skin when changing the bag. That's what the ostomy trainer told us to do. Is there any product that could help the irritated area without affecting the bond between the skin and the glued fabric holding the bag on? I use Hollister as my ostomy supplier.

Thanks,

Pat Burke

G-Day point,

First, do you use a washer or seal before your bag?

I also use Hollister, and that's OK for me, but we are all different. Why don't you try a few of the other brands? It could be the adhesive that your skin doesn't like.

Regards, IGGIE

Nervous but excited about tomorrow. I have been reading some of the threads here and am brand new to the site. I am grateful to have had the ileostomy so my body had a chance to heal but am truly hoping all goes well with the operation and future.

I have a collapsed disk in my back and sleeping on it for the past 7 months because of the bag has caused me constant daily excruciating pain. I haven't slept through the night and have had so many accidents.

I am so glad I found this site. Gained so much information so I am much better prepared for what happens post operation and what worked for people diet and supplement (fiber) wise. Thank you for that.

Not sure if this will help you. I have a loop colostomy and had a lot of problems with my skin, so my ostomy nurse told me to apply cortisone cream and fungal cream mixed together, to leave it on for about 15 minutes, and to wash it off with Cetaphil, dry thoroughly, and then dust with fungal powder or stoma powder, dab on Cavilon skin protector, and put a ring around the stoma. I can do this because my output comes in fits and starts, but I'm not sure about how urine output behaves.

I am also thinking it may be fungal. Try some Desonex "crusted" with a barrier wipe. That would be my first attempted fix.

I always use barrier wipes with my urostomy. There is too much potential for a little urine to get on the skin during changes. That would give you spotty irritation mostly on the bottom side.

I'm assuming you aren't getting leaks. If you have leaks, that's the source of the problem since urine is quite caustic. If you have leaks, let us know what's happening and we can try to troubleshoot with you.

If there are no leaks and the redness is evenly distributed around the entire area where the flange attaches to the skin, it might be an allergy and you should try different brands.

Hubz has a colostomy, but any red skin has been helped the most by using stoma powder in a crusting technique with Cavilon barrier spray. Adding a barrier ring that's made thicker on the bellybutton side has worked great to prevent leaks.

Pat hi,

I also use Hollister. I remove the plaster using Dansac wipes. Before I apply any device, I swipe the skin with 3M Cavilon. Then I apply a Hollister skin barrier and finally the Hollister single-chamber bag. I have had a urostomy since mid-2023 and have never had any skin challenges.

Success.

Sorbaderm foam applicator

Do your routine cleaning.

Apply the Sorbaderm around the stoma on affected skin.

Leave to dry for 30 seconds and put on your stoma bag.

If my skin becomes irritated around the stoma, I apply Sudocrem, which works wonders. Within a couple of days, it's cleared.

Hi, I'm Marsha, and I have had my ileostomy for over 60 years, way before all the common products or stoma care nurses. Doctors were of no help, so we helped each other. Trial and error really works! Don't be afraid of soap. Personally, I don't use it because I have sensitive skin (in general). The skin around any stoma is subject to "irritation." I use Eakin Barrier seal (cut in half) since my issue is "under" the stoma (which is a very old gal and is pulling in). But the "seal" can easily be cut and molded. Another oldie (but goodie) is to make sure you coat the irritated area with "stomahesive powder," which can have a healing effect. Someone suggested you use an antibiotic or cortisone salve. Because I use a two-piece unit, I can wedge cream around the stoma after I put on the faceplate before attaching the pouch. I have more suggestions, but using common sense and basic first aid really does work. Please feel free to write back if you need more help. Best regards, Marsha

So I've only had my stoma for a few months. And yesterday, for the first time, it was very red and unhappy around the stoma. I was reading on the Soulmates community on Reddit. Someone said to try calamine lotion, and I did, and it almost immediately began to feel better. It dries, and you can go ahead and apply everything else you use. I always use a barrier strip, stoma powder, and adhesive spray before putting on my barrier. Then I put the back plate on and then my bag. I obviously use a two-piece system: Hollister.

Stomahesive wafers. Cut hole to the size of the stoma. I have never had a skin problem while using this product. Better than any seals I have tried.
