Using Eakin Seal to Create a Convex Flange - Tips and Effectiveness?

This topic is about finding a creative solution when you need a convex flange for your stoma but only have flat ones available. The person in need has a stoma that retracts, so they require convexity to ensure a good seal. An ET nurse suggested using an Eakin Cohesive Seal to create the needed shape. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Basic Method:
- Remove the release paper from the Eakin seal and mold it snugly around the stoma while it's on the skin. This is easier than attaching it to the flange first.
- Place the flat barrier or wafer over the seal, then press and hold for 30 to 60 seconds to ensure it sticks well.

2. Improving Adhesion and Flexibility:
- Warm the flat flange before applying it. You can use a hair-dryer or hold it under your arm. This softens the plastic, activates the adhesive, and helps it mold over the raised Eakin ring.

3. Effectiveness:
- Many people have found this technique works well, providing a seal similar to a true convex wafer.
- Be prepared for the Eakin rings to adhere very firmly, which might require extra time to remove during changes.

4. Alternative Shaping Tip:
- Tear the Eakin ring in half, roll each half into a small tube, and place it around the stoma. This quickly and evenly builds up a convex ridge.

5. General Encouragement:
- Experimenting with the supplies you have is worthwhile when stock is limited. Having both flat and convex options can increase your flexibility.

6. Mentioned Products:
- Eakin Cohesive Seal
- Convex moldable flange from Conatec
- Generic flat wafer or flat flange

These insights can help you manage your supplies effectively and maintain a reliable seal for your stoma.
