Post-Hartmann Procedure: Dealing with Abdominal Swelling and Complications

This topic is about someone who had a Hartmann procedure, which involves removing a section of the bowel and creating an end-colostomy. After initially recovering well, they started experiencing significant abdominal swelling, which feels like being six months pregnant. Despite taking laxatives and passing stool, the swelling hasn't gone away, and there's a noticeable mass in the abdomen. They're wondering if this is normal and are looking for advice.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Keep in close contact with your surgeon, consultant, and especially your WOC (ostomy) nurse. Persistent swelling should be checked with imaging tests like an ultrasound or CT scan to ensure a thorough evaluation.

2. Consider discussing the following with your healthcare provider:
- The possibility of irrigating the colostomy to help with regular emptying and relieve any backup.
- Getting a CT scan to rule out an abdominal abscess, as similar symptoms have been misdiagnosed as constipation in the past.

3. For symptom relief and to help with bowel movement:
- Try a mostly liquid diet, such as soups and broths, until the swelling decreases.
- Increase your water intake and consider switching to decaffeinated green tea. It's best to avoid caffeine, as well as highly acidic or spicy foods.
- Taking cod-liver oil three times a day or drinking prune juice (even mixed with ice cream) can help soften stools and promote movement.
- Use warm compresses on your abdomen, perform gentle abdominal massages, and wear loose clothing to stay comfortable.

These steps might help manage the symptoms while you wait for your upcoming appointment with the surgical consultant.
