Swimming in Dead Sea with an Ostomy?

Swimming or floating in the Dead Sea with an ostomy can be a unique experience, but it raises some concerns about how the high salt content might affect your ostomy appliance. Here are some helpful tips and insights to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time:

1. Appliance performance
- Many people with ostomies have reported no issues with modern one-piece or two-piece disposable wafer systems while floating in the Dead Sea.
- Older appliances, like those from the 1990s with rigid plastic wafers and bonding cement, might not hold up as well. Modern adhesives are generally more reliable.
- Consider using semi-circular sticky barrier extenders around the baseplate for added security.
- After leaving the water, rinse your pouch and wafer thoroughly under the beach showers to prevent the concentrated salt from damaging the adhesive and plastic.

2. Water behavior and body comfort
- You won't be able to swim in the traditional sense; instead, you'll float effortlessly, which can make it difficult to stand up in water deeper than knee-height.
- Avoid putting your face in the water, as even small splashes can sting your eyes and mouth. Sensitive areas like armpits and the groin may also tingle or burn slightly.
- Limit your time in the water to about 8 minutes and rinse off afterward, as the water is highly corrosive.

3. Hydration and heat
- The desert climate can dehydrate you quickly, so drink plenty of water before and after your visit.
- The beach surface can get extremely hot, so wear footwear right up to the water's edge.
- Be cautious with the shower water, as it can be scalding hot if the pipes have been sitting in the sun. Let it run for a bit before using.

4. Extras for the day
- Bring waterproof tape, spare appliances, wipes, and plastic bags in case you need to make an unexpected change.
- If you've been tanning, be aware that the salt and mineral mud can exfoliate your skin and lighten your tan.

5. Side trips and timing
- Consider climbing or taking a cable car up Masada at dawn for a breathtaking sunrise view.
- Given the current security situation, check government travel advisories and consider postponing your trip if hostilities escalate.
