Traveling with a Colostomy - Need advice on large bags for long flights

Traveling with a colostomy can be a bit challenging, especially when you're facing long flights and limited access to facilities. If you're preparing for such a journey, here are some helpful tips and advice to make your travel experience smoother and more comfortable:

1. **Communicate with the Airline**: Let the airline know about your needs at check-in. They might be able to offer you a seat upgrade or extra space to help you manage your pouch more comfortably.

2. **Prepare an In-Seat Change Kit**:
- Bring pre-cut wafers (remember to pack scissors in your checked luggage).
- Use a disposable plastic-backed pad to protect your clothes.
- Have at least six baby wipes handy to manage any leakage.
- Carry travel-size Na Scent deodorant drops to keep things fresh.
- Use Cavillon Plus spray or wipes for skin protection.
- Keep a small waste bag ready for disposal; cabin crew can help discreetly dispose of it if needed.

3. **Practice Makes Perfect**: Practice changing your pouch quickly. Some experienced travelers can do it in under a minute.

4. **Pouch Options**: Consider using Hollister closed opaque Midi bags or Coloplast Midi pouches, as they have been reported to perform well during long flights without issues like ballooning.

5. **Seating and Mobility**:
- If possible, book an aisle seat to make movement easier.
- Try to avoid changing or emptying your pouch during meal service for privacy.

6. **Supply Planning**:
- Keep all essential ostomy supplies in your carry-on. Security might check them, but they are usually allowed through.
- While one traveler packed triple the supplies needed, you might aim for double your usual amount, plus some extras like StomaHesive powder and scented nappy bags.

7. **Consider Colostomy Irrigation**: This method can keep you output-free for 24–48 hours, which might eliminate the need to change or empty your pouch during the flight.

8. **Stay Positive**: With good planning, you can reduce anxiety and ensure that your stoma doesn't limit your career or travel opportunities.
