Post-op bladder discharge - causes, duration, and management?

This topic is about what to expect when undergoing a urostomy surgery where the bladder is left in place. The person is curious about potential discharge from the bladder, how long it might last, and whether they will need to use pads or other absorbent products after the surgery.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. In cases where the bladder is left intact, it is often due to non-cancerous reasons, such as preserving sexual function or dealing with neurological issues like spina bifida.

2. After the surgery, any discharge from the bladder is usually minimal. It typically dries up within a few days to a couple of weeks after leaving the hospital. Long-term leakage is rare.

3. Once the initial healing period is over, pads are generally not needed since urine is no longer directed to the bladder.

4. Surgical wound drains are usually removed before you leave the hospital, and this process is not painful.

5. Post-operative pain is generally moderate and short-lived. Most people recover quickly and find that their quality of life improves with the use of a pouch system.

6. Sometimes, retained bladders can harbor bacteria. To prevent or treat infections, intermittent catheter irrigation with sterile water and a water-soluble antibiotic ointment like Neosporin can be helpful.

7. It's important to have a detailed discussion with your surgeon or stoma nurse about the procedure and what to expect. This can help alleviate any anxiety you might have before the surgery.
