Post-Rectum Removal: Dealing with Discharge and Pressure

This topic is about someone who had their rectum removed in 2012 and now has a permanent colostomy on the left side. Despite the surgery, they are experiencing ongoing issues with discharge and pressure in the pelvic area. They are concerned about whether this is normal and are seeking advice.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Check if any part of the rectum was left behind:
- If the anus was completely closed (often referred to as a "Barbie-butt"), experiencing ongoing discharge is not typical and should be checked by a doctor as soon as possible.
- If a small part of the rectum remains, it is common to have long-term mucus drainage. Sometimes, this mucus can harden or turn brown, which might feel like stool and cause pressure.

2. Blood in the discharge is not normal and should be examined by a surgeon or a gastroenterologist promptly.

3. Don’t just wait for a callback from the doctor’s office. Call again and insist on getting an immediate appointment. If your insurance requires it, see your primary-care doctor the same day to get a referral.

4. While waiting to see a doctor, remember that many people with permanent colostomies lead normal lives. The important thing is to rule out any serious causes of bleeding so you can have peace of mind once you have a clear explanation.
