Guitar Playing Causing Ileostomy Bag Leaks – Any Advice?

This topic is about a person with a permanent ileostomy who has started experiencing leaks from their ostomy bag since taking up guitar lessons. The pressure from the guitar against the stoma area seems to be causing the flange seal to break, leading to these leaks. They are looking for practical advice to prevent this from happening.

Here are some helpful suggestions:

1. Pressure management
- The guitar might be pressing against the stoma and causing output to be forced under the flange. Try repositioning the guitar higher on your torso or adjusting your playing posture to relieve pressure.
- If changing the position isn't feasible, consider using a hard-shell stoma guard. These are available on ostomy supply websites and can protect the appliance from pressure.

2. Meal timing and size
- Pay attention to when your stoma is most active and try to avoid eating 1-2 hours before your guitar lessons.
- Keep your meals small before lessons to reduce output and lower the risk of leaks during long sessions, like music lessons or extended car rides.

3. Alternative instruments
- If other strategies don't work, you might want to try playing a smaller instrument, such as a ukulele, which puts less pressure on your abdomen.
