Reframing Ostomy Language - Introducing the Virtual Rectum

This topic is about finding ways to make conversations about ostomies more comfortable and less embarrassing. The idea is to change the language we use, which might help both the person with the ostomy and those they talk to feel more at ease. One suggestion is to refer to an ostomy as a "virtual rectum," which sounds modern and avoids mentioning plastic or waste.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. When dealing with ignorant comments about ostomies, consider whether to ignore them or educate the person. This decision might depend on your age and the situation.

2. Normalize the ostomy experience by being open with close friends. For example, one person lets friends see her stoma and pouch before trips, so they know what to expect, including any odors.

3. Plan ahead when traveling by finding less-used bathrooms, like those on the lowest floors, in gyms, or empty conference rooms, to manage odor and ensure privacy.

4. Decide how much to share based on your relationship with the person:
- For strangers you might not see again, keep explanations short.
- For people you see regularly, first ask what they know and why they’re interested before deciding how much detail to share.

5. Having a support network is important. Friends who understand medical challenges can help make living with an ostomy feel like "no big deal," and connecting with fellow ostomates can provide mutual encouragement.
