Can a Hernia Cause a Rash from Bag Tugging?

This topic is about exploring whether a rash under an ostomy bag could be caused by the tugging or pulling of the pouching system due to a parastomal hernia. Here are some helpful insights and advice on managing this issue:

1. Tugging from a hernia is unlikely to cause a rash. Skin irritation is more commonly due to leaks, allergic reactions, or moisture trapped under the wafer or pouch.

2. To manage weepy or irritated skin, many people find relief using a method called "crusting," which involves applying a skin-prep product along with stoma powder.

3. For a topical antimicrobial treatment, consider using Anasept Gel or Anasept Spray. Apply a thin layer to the rash, let it sit briefly, then rub or blot it off before using a barrier wipe and attaching the wafer. This can be effective against bacteria like C. diff and MRSA.

4. A moisture-control routine suggested by a nurse includes:
- Taking a daily shower and thoroughly blow-drying both the wafer and pouch with a hair dryer on a cool or warm setting.
- Rotating two pouches by wearing a dry, freshly dried pouch each day while the other, previously rinsed, dries for reuse. Each pouch is used twice.
- Blow-drying the wafer every day as well.
- Dusting the affected skin with Athlete’s Foot (antifungal) powder until the rash resolves.
- In hot weather, wearing ostomy underwear or panties with a built-in pouch can help keep the area drier.
