Roll-On vs Wipe Skin Barriers for Ostomy Care

This topic is about choosing between roll-on and wipe skin barriers for ostomy care. The person sharing their experience has been using a roll-on product called Coloplast Prep Protective Skin Barrier and is concerned about switching to a different product, Safe N Simple No Sting Skin Barrier Film wipes, due to potential changes in wear time or skin issues. Here are some insights and advice from others who have experience with these products:

- Many users have had positive experiences with Safe N Simple No Sting Skin Barrier Film. Some combine it with other products like a skin-prep wipe, medical adhesive spray, and Coloplast Brava Elastic Barrier Strips to strengthen the edges of the wafer.

- A suggested routine for applying these products is:
1. Use a barrier spray (either Safe N Simple or Coloplast).
2. Follow with a skin-prep wipe.
3. Apply a medical adhesive spray to create a very sticky surface.
4. Finally, apply the barrier ring and pouch.
This method can support a schedule of changing the setup twice a week, such as on Mondays and Thursdays, with minimal leaks.

- Switching to convex pouching systems might help further reduce leakage.

- Some people find that not using any skin barrier at all can improve skin health and reduce stinging, especially if the stoma or the skin around it is irritated.

- An alternative product for securing the setup is Perma-Type “Pink Tape” (1-inch). By cutting it so that half adheres to the wafer and half to the skin, it provides a strong hold that can last up to a week and remains secure even while swimming. This tape is available at many pharmacies and online.
